When you need copy, instinctively, you turn to your
advertising agency. Often, they hand your brief to a
freelance writer, like me. So, I write your copy, you
love it, and we both go home with a warm feeling inside.

One question, though.

Why are you paying so much for my services?

Instruct any business with the word ‘agency’ in it (estate, recruitment, dating), and the outcome is predictable. You acquire the property, employee, or soulmate you’re searching for, but pay far more than you need to for the privilege.

It’s no different with copywriting. Buy a day’s worth of my work through an advertising agency, and you pay around £800. On the other hand, hire me direct, and that figure plummets to £350. Or, if you don’t need me for a full day, just £60 an hour. Last time I sneaked a peak, an agency was charging my time at over £100 an hour. I thought only plumbers command that kind of loot.

I’ve nothing against advertising agencies. On the contrary, I’m all for them, as many are longstanding clients. However, as your own agency would be the first to tell you, advertising and marketing are about isolating the simple truth of a product or service, then communicating the pants off it.

With copywriting, the simple truth is this: you pay less when you go direct. And just to communicate the pants off that, you pay less when you go direct.

So, next time you need copy, resist your instincts, and contact me.
